This workshop focus is urban design and architecture from climatic, passive and bioclimatic approach. Throughout the workshop, the fundamentals important to natural ventilation natural lighting, solar protection comfort in buildings is introduced. During the workshop designers will be exposed to environmental design decision making and verify the success of the passive design measures in relation to local weather context using local weather files.

Audience: urban planners, urban designers, landscape architects, architects and building engineers, environmental designers, project managers, municipality officials, sustainability experts.

Workshop Objectives
Primary objective is for participant to be able to understand the Bioclimatic Design in Hot Climates principles.Each participant will be able to :
  • Identify the key principles of the Bioclimatic Design in Hot Climates
  • Discuss the Bioclimatic Design in Hot Climates design process for both buildings and homes
  • Describe the intent and associated strategies of the Bioclimatic Design in Hot Climates
  • Describe successful passive design strategies
  • Prepare for the verification of the design using simulation techniques

About the intructor

Prof. Dr. Attia is an architectural and building engineer specialized in decision support for sustainable high performance buildings. Dr. Attia is the author of the book Redefining Sustainable Architecture and the co-author of the book, Modeling, Design, and Optimization of Net-Zero Energy Buildings. He established the Sustainable Buildings Design in Liege University in Belgium with on buildings’ energy efficiency, thermal comfort, indoor environmental quality, energy simulation, rating systems, performance auditing and liability. SBD lab focuses on integrating performance-based design approaches and monitoring techniques as an early decision support methodology for high quality sustainable design.
